WHY LITERACY MATTERS

Azura Literacy strives to prevent poverty and improve life outcomes for disadvantaged children in Arizona by providing literacy resources and support critical for 4th grade reading proficiency.

Kids who are not proficient in reading by 4th grade are 4x less likely to graduate high school than their proficient peers, putting them at higher risk of experiencing homelessness, incarceration, and a continued cycle of poverty.

Children living in poverty and children in foster care have lower rates of reading proficiency than their peers and are more likely to suffer the negative impacts of illiteracy. Currently in AZ, only 19% of foster kids are proficient in reading, and only 27% of kids from low-income homes are proficient.

We know that literacy is critical for success in school and life, and we are committed to serving vulnerable kids in our communities with compassionate support!
